Video as an investment rather than an expense
The default treatment of video in most marketing budgets is as a brand awareness expense: something you spend money on for long-term equity without expecting a measurable short-term return. This treatment produces video that is evaluated on production quality and creative ambition rather than business outcomes, distributed to whatever channels the brand happens to be active on, and reported on through metrics like views and reach that cannot be connected to revenue.
Two ways to put video in a budget
Brand awareness money, justified by how it looks. Performs well in award submissions.
Briefed backwards from a business objective, with the measurement in place before production starts.
The result is video that looks impressive in award submissions and does relatively little for business performance. Magic Pulpo's approach treats video as a performance channel that should generate measurable returns. That requires thinking about video differently, from the brief stage through to distribution and attribution.
The brief as a performance document
A video brief that will produce performance-oriented content starts with the business objective and works backwards to the creative. What action do we want the viewer to take as a result of watching this video? At what stage of the purchase funnel is the primary target audience? What platform will this video be distributed on, and what are the specific creative constraints of that platform? What is the measurable success criterion for this video, and what tracking infrastructure will we need to measure it?
These questions sound obvious but are consistently missing from video briefs. Most briefs specify the creative concept, the talent requirements, the delivery format, and the budget. Fewer specify the conversion action, the target audience funnel stage, the platform-specific constraints, or the measurement approach. The result is video produced in a creative vacuum and distributed on a hope-for-the-best basis.
Format and platform specificity
Different video formats serve different functions in the marketing funnel, and different platforms require genuinely different creative approaches. Reformatting the same video for different aspect ratios is not enough. A YouTube pre-roll that works needs to make its point within the first five seconds because that is when viewers have the option to skip. A LinkedIn video that works needs to make sense without sound: LinkedIn's own research found that only 37% of mobile B2B video viewers usually watch with the sound on (LinkedIn). On Instagram Reels, the hook has to land within the first couple of seconds, because viewers swipe away fast.
Producing a single "hero" video and distributing it across all platforms is a strategy that delivers mediocre performance on all of them. Producing platform-native video for each primary distribution channel, with shared creative assets and a unified narrative framework, produces better performance outcomes for the same production budget.
Attribution and measurement
Video attribution remains technically challenging because video frequently influences purchase decisions without appearing in the last-click attribution chain. The practical measurement approaches that work are: view-through attribution in paid video campaigns (attributing conversion credit to viewers who watched a video ad but did not click), brand lift studies for awareness campaigns (measuring the incremental increase in brand recall, consideration, and purchase intent among exposed vs unexposed audiences), and content-assisted pipeline tracking for B2B (measuring the proportion of closed deals where a prospect engaged with video content during their evaluation).
Magic Pulpo's UNICEF 360° VR campaigns demonstrated the measurability of even immersive video formats: the Mexico campaign reached 550,000 people and raised $180K USD, with a clear data trail connecting video exposure to donation behaviour. The attribution challenge is real but solvable with the right measurement infrastructure in place before production begins.
