A poppy, a chair and eight themes.
Identity for the Petőfi Kulturális Program: a poppy mark built from the programme’s themes and a folk chair, a palette of poppy red and field colours, Satoshi and Palatino, eight pictograms and a folk-pattern system for posters, shelters, roll-ups, shirts and murals.

The challenge
The Petőfi Kulturális Program is a Ministry of Culture programme carrying Sándor Petőfi’s name. It runs music, folk art, costume, dance, song and training events across Hungary and needed one mark that could stand for all of them, from a village folklore evening to a national stage, without a different logo for each.
The approach
The mark starts with the poppy, the flower most often tied to Petőfi’s poetry and the Great Plain, and with a folk chair as the image of home and community. The programme’s themes sit as dots around the poppy, so the logo can be rebuilt for a sub-programme by changing which dots it carries.
Poppy red leads the palette, with sky blue, ochre, olive, meadow green and amber from the landscape. Type is Satoshi for headings and Palatino for text. Eight pictograms, for music, folk art, the older generation, training, song, folklore, dance and costume, work in colour and as tiles on black, and a repeating folk pattern in red and blue dresses the long surfaces: a mural, a shirt, a map of the programme’s locations.
The guide ends in applications: poster and flyer templates, a bus shelter, two roll-ups, a t-shirt and a wall mural.
