How to redesign your website without losing SEO rankings

The technical SEO checklist for website redesigns: redirect mapping, content migration, canonical strategy and post-launch monitoring to protect organic traffic.

Why website redesigns destroy SEO, and how to prevent it

Website redesigns are one of the most reliable ways to destroy years of accumulated organic search equity. A redesign that seems like a routine project (new design, new CMS, new URL structure) can result in a steep drop in organic traffic if the technical SEO migration is not handled correctly. Magic Pulpo has seen this pattern repeatedly: a brand invests months in a redesign and launches to find that their organic traffic collapses within weeks as Google reprocesses the site.

The root causes are consistent: URL structures change without proper redirect mapping, content that ranked for valuable queries is removed or merged, internal link equity is not preserved, and the technical configuration (canonical tags, robots.txt, sitemap) is set up incorrectly on the new site. Each of these is preventable with proper planning.

Four ways a redesign loses the rankings

URLs moveStructure changes with no redirect map behind it.
Content disappearsPages that ranked get merged or cut in the tidy-up.
Link equity dropsInternal linking rebuilt from scratch, years of signal with it.
Config is wrongCanonicals, robots.txt and the sitemap set up incorrectly on the new site.
Every one of these is preventable at planning stage, and expensive afterwards.

Phase 1: Pre-launch audit

Before a single line of new code is written, conduct a full audit of the existing site's organic performance. Export all currently indexed URLs from Google Search Console, documenting the organic traffic, rankings, and backlink profile for each. Identify the pages that drive the most organic value. Usually a small share of pages drives most of the organic traffic.

These high-value pages should be treated as non-negotiable: their URL structure should be preserved wherever possible, and where URL changes are unavoidable, 301 redirects must be planned and verified before launch.

URL mapping: the most critical migration task

Every URL on the old site that has organic traffic, backlinks, or both must be mapped to its equivalent on the new site. This mapping should be documented in a spreadsheet with three columns: old URL, new URL, and redirect type (301 for permanent moves, 410 for intentionally removed pages). No URL should be left without a destination.

For sites with hundreds or thousands of pages, automated redirect mapping using crawl tools (Screaming Frog, Sitebulb) combined with URL pattern rules is more reliable than manual mapping. Pattern-based redirects handle large site migrations more consistently and are less prone to human error in execution.

Post-launch monitoring: the 90-day window

The 90 days following a website launch are the most critical for SEO stability. Set up daily monitoring of Google Search Console for crawl errors, indexation changes, and ranking movements. Configure alerts for significant traffic drops. Crawl the new site immediately after launch to identify any redirect chains, broken links, or missing meta tags that were not caught in pre-launch testing.

Google says that for a medium-sized site it can take a few weeks or more before it starts showing the new URLs in place of the old ones (Google Search Central). Minor fluctuations in the first two weeks are normal; significant drops that persist beyond four weeks require active investigation and intervention.
